Tom Brady lost $30M in cryptocurrency company's fall

WASHINGTON (TND) — Former NFL superstar Tom Brady apparently lost millions of dollars when FTX -- the now-defunct cryptocurrency company -- went belly up.

The New York Times on Friday reported the retired football star is among celebrities "dealing with the fallout from the crypto crash."

Brady, 45, served as an "ambassador" for FTX, which filed for bankruptcy in November.

Not only did the Times note Brady appeared in television commercials that promoted FTX as “the most trusted” institution in the world of crypto, his money "was also at stake."

"As part of an endorsement agreement Mr. Brady signed in 2021, FTX had paid him $30 million, a deal that consisted almost entirely of FTX stock, three people with knowledge of the contract said," according to the Times. "Mr. Brady’s wife at the time, the supermodel Gisele Bündchen, was paid $18 million in FTX stock, one of the people said."

FTX has since gone under and Sam Bankman-Fried, who founded the company, is facing criminal fraud charges.

Times noted Brady, as well as Bündchen, "have been sued by a group of FTX customers seeking compensation from the celebrities who endorsed the exchange," adding that the terms of the deal meant the couple, who were married for 13 years and divorced in 2022, would have been required "to pay taxes on at least some of their now worthless FTX stock, two people familiar with the endorsement deal said."

Other celebs caught up in the FTX drama include Shaquille O'Neal, Lindsay Lohan, Jake Paul, Soulja Boy, Lil Yachty, and Kim Kardashian.

The news comes as rumors swirl that Brady has been dating Kardashian. However, the two are reportedly "just friends."

In March, Brady squashed other rumors that he had plans to come out of retirement for a second time and start another season with the NFL.

The retired quarterback, who is widely considered the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, has won seven Super Bowl titles, including six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
