A brown water advisory has been issued for the island of Maui after heavy rain sent stormwater runoff into coastal waters, the state Department of Health announced Wednesday afternoon.
The public is advised to stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible sewage, pathogens, chemicals, dead animals or their fecal matter and flood debris.
While not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff, if the water is brown, stay out, the DOH said.
The DOH also advised that people check with their physicians if they have any health concerns.
